Wasting Time

I usually get home from dental school between 5:45 and 7:00 p.m. each weekday. I arrive each morning around 8:15 a.m- so I’m usually at school a minimum of 9 hours. All you full-time job people might be saying “Yes Nathan that’s what adults do.” True enough-except I always have more dental school to do. I have to make phone calls to line up new patients, I have lab work I return to the school at night to do, I have to study for my 15 classes! Yes that is right 15 classes!: Endodontics, Fixed Prosthodontics, Pedodontics, Orthodontics, Periodontics, Dental Research, Basic Internal Medicine, Implants, Pathology, Operative, Removable Prosthodontics, Oral Surgery & Sedation, Oral Radiology, Practice Management and Diagnosis. Crazy. The...

I love being productive

I had a super weekend with Daria while we made some serious headway on ordering and decorating our home. Yesterday, we hit up Canadian Tire, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Michael’s, Home Outfitters, JYSK, a health food store, Burger King and Superstore. The credit card was hot! Here’s a list of what we bought in the order we bought it: 3 small wooden boxes and 1 medium sized green candle 1 pack of wheatgrass seeds 3 really vibrantly coloured straw baskets a bunge of fake (or to make it sound better artificial) flowers and greenery: bright gerbera daisies and two types of grasses, and 6 neat star-shaped foam strands to hold wallet sized pictures 1 laser level and 1 hex key set double bacon cheeseburger, gravy & fries, orange/rootbeer pop, and whatever...

WP 1.5

You might be wondering did I come to the right website? What happened to that old design (if 3-4 weeks can be considered old)? Word Press released a new superior version to its popular free blogging software and I had to have it. So until I change this default design we are back to a nice blue clean crisp design. I was sorta getting sick of the old design anyways so I’m grateful for the change. Hopefully I can come up with a design that will keep me happy for awhile. Just so your aware this update uses ‘whitelisting’ the reverse of getting blacklisted. So instead of trying to keep every texas poker spammer out I just let those I want to comment in. Once your on the list you can comment like crazy all over my blog. It’s kinda like having a...

Reverence & Meditation

We had a discussion in our priesthood quorum today on Elements of Worship from The Teachings of David O. McKay. One of the reasons I enjoy blogging is the opportunity of introspection and contemplation it affords. Clearly much of that introspection never graces these pages but believe you me it is happening! Here are a few of President McKay’s thoughts on Reverence: Inseparable from the acceptance of the existence of God is an attitude of reverence, to which I wish now to call attention most earnestly to the entire Church. The greatest manifestation of spirituality is reverence; indeed, reverence is spirituality. Reverence is profound respect mingled with love. It is a complex emotion made up of mingled feelings of the soul.Reverence embraces...

Feeling Down

You always hear how great duvets are. In the past I think I’ve even slept under a few as a guest. We bought a duvet this past week at IKEA and let me tell you it is heavenly. We already have a great mattress set, but the duvet takes sleeping comfort to the next level. My wife came up to me today raving with giddy excitement over last nights slumber (I had nothing to do with it besides fitting the bill for the duvet). I zoomed on over to IKEA’s website to grab an image of our quilt and found this odd selling point: Good to Know Down and feathers used by IKEA are never taken from living birds. I had really never given the poor geese much thought but it made me wonder would I rather be sleeping on feathers pulled from a living creature or a dead one? IKEA...

Where Gynecology and Dentistry Meet

This post is literally “jaw dropping.” Tonight I was reading about Non-Odontogenic Cysts in Oral Pathology and came across the following: “These ‘complex’ teratomas are most common in the ovaries…Occasionally, ovarian teratomes produce well-formed teeth, or even partially complete jaws.” I couldn’t believe this, so I Googled “ovarian teeth” (Google is completely reliable). Sure enough the first three hits produced radiographs and case histories for this rare anomaly. “This 20 y/o female complained of pelvic pain. A portion of her KUB shown above demonstrates four well formed teeth on the right side of the pelvis compatible with a well differentiated ovarian teratoma (dermoid). She was referred to a...

One of the best buzzer beaters

Via Darren Barefoot’s site we find a link to an incredible shot. I too played something similar to basketball tonight. The team we played in intramural rec league was not incredibly coordinated and their defensive strategy consisted of a lot of shoving. There was a moment in the game where I got pretty ticked off at this player who kept laying on the cheap shots. Finally I resorted to animal instincts, threw an elbow his direction with a “mildly worded” caution to refrain from further harassment. Moments later a teammate of mine performed an incredible acrobatic crash to avoid the corner of the sideline stands literally sliding 15 feet across the front row on his back/side before stopping. Later on I sustained a few minor injuries (boo hoo hoo)...

Stupid Van

Today I had that wonderful experience known as car trouble. About 20″ of snow dumped down this past weekend and I had made a church commitment to go out and do some teaching. We had a great afternoon and it was all uplifting, purposeful and, in short, awesome. As soon as the work we needed to do was finished and my time to head home had come I could feel my steering wheel tighten. I know that rigid feeling on my lovely Dodge Caravan (that I am seriously considering not buying when I get a new vehicle) because it has happened to me 3 times in the last year and a half. The serpentine belt got taken off by the heavy snow under my vehicle. This belt also powers the alternator so it is only a matter of time before your battery loses its charge. I hunted for an...

Daria & Nathan Unite

I tried a little experiment today. I’ve wanted to host a blog that included both Daria and I’s blog in one place. Well since we use the same basic cascading style sheet (CSS) with similar tags you see the merged result. Daria’s blog is at right. I have made no effort some effort to make this look good. In the future I think the www.muirheadkingdom.com page will be one that includes both of our blogs in a readable format and other unifying elements. Till then enjoy this weekend’s display of Daria & Nathan’s Crazy Blog! If this looks absolutely wacko you probably need to use a better CSS browser like Firefox....
