Middle Child

Brigs: Hey mom I figured out something. Daria: What’s that Brigs? Brigs: I figured out that I am the middle child. Daria: Wow you’re so smart! How do you feel about being the middle child? Brigs: It’s awesome!

Lola at Beaver Lake

Today after church we made Kraft Dinner with hot dog slices, and chocolate milk (not your healthiest meal but still an occasional favorite). Then the children and I left for the great outdoors. Lola was all dressed up in a cute fall outfit including a pink hat, dress tights and adorable coat and shoes. We went to Beaver Lake for the first time, and boy was it gorgeous with the fall colors, ivy and huge yellow and orange maple leafs scattered eveywhere. Some remote controlled sailboat hobbyists were racing their boats on the lake. I found this fascinating to watch, as I always wanted a remote controlled boat as a kid, but it was always an impractical thing to give a boy in December. Lola really wanted to just run to the beach and get dirty. I held her off and we...

A nice Saturday

I feel like I’m expending a fair amount of mental energy these days, and really just loving a day to decompress with my wife and children without interruption or concern. Today was one of those days. I woke up and read some of Steve Jobs biography and then did some pumpkin carving research. I read up on techniques and downloaded some templates I knew the kids would love—Angry Birds, Sonic the Hedgehog, Mario, Yugi Oh. Daria bought pumpkins and carving instruments earlier in the week so we set up and carved away. Dylan carved a Legend of Zelda Triforce pumpkin design and Daria and I helped Brigs and Noah. It was funny coaxing them into pulling the seeds and goo out as they really don’t get their hands dirty all too often. But they dug right in and did...

Our Teleporting Baby

This morning I was the first to wake along with Lola. As we made our way through the quiet house a mischievous idea came to me. We crept down to Joshua and Brigs room and then I placed Lola up on the top bunk beside Joshua (there’s a significant railing). Lola was in on the gig too, not making a single sound. Pretty soon Joshua became aware of Lola, “What the?” I heard as a grin crossed my face atop the stairs. “How did Lola get here? Brigs how did she get here? Maybe she did climb up here, or maybe I was sleep walking and brought her down here.” That’s when I came down and told them I thought Lola was a teleporting baby. Classic. UPDATE: Joshua just asked if we could rig up a camera over his bed so we could capture how Lola is

Let me start over

Tonight at dinner Brigs was telling us about a book he read at school. I always ask the boys how their day was and what they learned at school, the default answer is usually, “I forgot.” But with a little follow-up he explained many things about his day—and then he got interrupted. And I swear this is some genetic trait in my family, because true to Muirhead form he said, “Can I start over?” I had to really bite my cheeks and hold in my laughter (though Daria and I shared a knowing smirk) because this is classic Brigs. It also really reminded me of growing up with my sister Elizabeth, she had to be heard from start to finish without interruption. My mom seems to have the same trait, although I can’t decide if she is getting better...

Thanksgiving

We spent Canadian thanksgiving in Calgary this year, surrounded by our families. We had two wonderful dinners with tasty fare and desserts. My parents graciously welcomed us into their home to stay. A highlight was playing Rockband: The Beatles with Dylan and my Dad. I consider the Beatles the greatest band of all time, so it is fun to enjoy their music. The animation and illustrations bring the music to life and remind me of the Cirque de Soleil performance I saw in Las Vegas two years ago. I highly reccomend playing the game especially with a baby boomer. I also really enjoyed attending church and the lessons were interesting and inspiring.

We are having a girl!

Due to a new policy at our local radiology clinic and a very miserable radiologist tech we were unable to find out the sex of our baby. Unfortunately I had to miss the ultrasound or I would have just interpreted it myself. So instead we decided to get a private ultrasound done on our vacation in Palm Springs. What a nice place too! They projected the ultrasound on a huge theater style screen and had huge comfy couches for our whole family to sit on. The tech was fun and personable. She went hunting for the sex right away and told us that we were having our first girl! Then we got to see precious 4D footage of her moving and yawning and her cute little body and face. Wow. I’m incredibly excited and just love telling everyone. The more people I tell the more...

Hanging with Liz and Kent

Last night we traveled to Calgary to stay with the Cranmers and be with our soon-to-be daughter Serenity. It was great time together. I really enjoyed watching the cousins play. The adults stayed up late just talking, reminiscing and laughing. Saturday we just hung around the house stopping for eggs benedict and pizza structured around games movies chatting and play. Now we are off to see Australia leaving the kids with sitters. UPDATE: Just returned from Australia and it was superb. Had me teary about ten times. I was very impressed with the themes and story the performances direction and cinematography. Oscars are on the way.

Painting

The past couple of nights I’ve stolen an hour or so to paint a room with my four boys. I love the feeling of working alongside my family on a project. The boys are all quite proud of their handiwork and the paint job turned out great. It was quite adorable when Brigs and Joshua painted their names on the wall. A classic moment.

A Weekend to Remember

We traveled to Calgary this weekend to spend more time with our soon-to-be daughter, currently going by the name of Serenity. Our time with Serenity kicked off at a Church Christmas party with a dinner, program, and dance. The highlight was watching Serenity dance– the girl has rhythm and energy! I even had my first dance with her which was a great moment. She has really already formed a strong attachment to Daria which is so cute to watch. Saturday Serenity came over to spend time with the boys at my in-laws. Joshua’s characteristic instinct to love and protect has already kicked in and he has been so tender and loving about and with Serenity. She is a fun little girl who loves to laugh and play and has a good nature about her. Noah loved seeing...
