My iPhone is Invincible
Yesterday I bought a new iPhone case that I am really liking, the iSkin revo, from the Apple store. I also got to palm a Macbook Air for the first time, which was amazing. I hope they offer a 17” model someday and/or beef up the processor. The iSkin revo may have saved my iPhone yesterday as I was in the hotel whirlpool and managed to pull my iPhone from its “safe” resting place into the whirlpool. Completely submerged. Um yeah. I don’t even need to describe the horror. I was convinced a now had a $600 paper weight on my hand. Even worse the iPhone fell behind me so I couldn’t be sure how long it had been submerged (based on my movements I think around 10 very long seconds). I removed the iPhone from the case and was surprised how reasonably dry it was. Fortunately the case has a little plug that blocks the dock connector and grips the phone very tightly. That didn’t stop the speakers and mic and camera from getting wet though, as there are openings in the case for them. Surprisingly I could still listen to music on the headphones, but not the speakers at all—at least in the iPod application. I could get the speakers to work in the Clock application – which gave me extreme hope. But then the headphones went. I went to youtube thinking a rapid disassembly of the iPhone to drain any water was my only hope but quickly realized I did not have the tools to do that. I stuffed kleenex into the headphone port and examined the water damage indicator which miraculously was stark white meaning it had suffered no water damage. The headphones returned and eventually the speakers; wifi and the on, vibrate and home buttons all worked the entire time, however the side volume buttons were having issues. I could not get the volume to go down as the volume up button was malfunctioning basically acting as if it was being pressed, moving the volume slider in the software only worked as long as you held your finger on the slider than the volume ramped up again. For some reason locking and then unlocking the volume limit control seemed to solve this issue, or maybe just time. I read a post on the internet that suggested putting the phone in a jar of rice would help to dry out the phone. I went down to the front desk and asked for some dried rice, no dice. To Wal-Mart! The phone seemed to be in perfect working order but I still did the rice trick overnight.
I am happy to report my iPhone is in perfect working order. Phewww!!
