Giving Brangelina A Run For Their Money!
Noah (the dream baby) has been waking up to nurse so many times in the night lately, I’m thinking that perhaps he’s ready for me to add some solids into his diet but I don’t want to start him too early. He’s four months now and a little chunk for sure. Do any of you have any suggestions or advice about starting your baby on solids? Is four months too young? Dylan started at three months but he had to be bottle fed because he needed soy milk and I think he just needed the extra oomph of having pablum too. I don’t want to rush Noah at all, but I do want to be able to get some rest too. Mommy’s out there - Daria needs your advice.

First Daria I want to tell you how much I enjoy your blog…your
hilarious dear.
About starting any child on solid food. A leading child specialist
advice on this matter is not until the first tooth has come through
the gums. When the first tooth appears it is a sign that the
stomach is ready to accept and digest solids.
I know that I started my oldest daughter on solids when she was
very young (advice from my mother), and she has had stomach and
digestive problems all of her life. Sooooooooooooo, when in doubt
wait for the teeth.
Good luck,
Auntie Anne

I couldn’t wait until my daughters first tooth…she would have
starved! She didn’t get her first one until she was almost a
year old. I started both of them when it seemed that they needed
the extra nutrition. I think you have to go with your instincts!
I started my son at about 4-5 months and he has never had any
stomach or digestive problems…my daughter has had them all her
life and she started later.
When in doubt take all the advise with a grain of salt…then do
what you think is best! You are Noah’s Mom and the best one to
determine what will work for him!

By solids do you mean baby food? Adding some rice cereal to his bottles twice a day might be a life saver without really giving solids yet. With all my neices and newphews we’ve started rice cereal right about this time and it keeps them full longer and adds a good 2-3 (sometimes 4) hours onto their sleeping time.

Rock on Wendi! That’s some sound advice, if you ask me.
Jason started on pablum when he was 4 months old. I didn’t introduce anything else for a long time because I still wanted to nurse him and really wanted to keep my baby a baby and he’s fine. No allergies, no problems unless there is some correlation between pablum and hitting your sister.
I wonder….

My doctor told me the same thing about putting a little rice cereal in his bottle, it just gives that extra something and may make him a little more fuller. As you know justin didnt get his first tooth until 9 months and I started him and rice cereals and baby food earlier than that and I didnt have any problem. I feel if you think your baby isnt getting enough to eat then just experiment with a little extra pablum, I dont think it will hurt at all.

I wouldn’t go by first tooth, my son sprouted his first tooth at 3 months, everybaby is different.. I would talk to your pediatrician and than follow your instinct. I also nursed my son, but I made the mistake of starting him with regular baby food, I would recommend starting with rice cereal and mixing it with either forumula or breast milk and making it thin to start with, until he gets used to swallowing thicker substances. Signs of reddiness include, the ability to sit up unasisted, interest in what other people are eating, and not being full from milk alone. I would also only do one new food a week or so, just in case there is an allergy or sensitivity and leave most likely allergy foods until he is much older…

First tooth? My son had his first two at three months. So I suppose giving him pablum was okay then. Slept alot longer after he started eating.

Well, as a father of four and grandfather of six, I consider myself quite an expert on this subject. But since you’ve already received so much advice already, I don’t think I will muddy the waters any further. I just know that you’ll do the right thing.

Every baby is different! Most of mine were breastfed only until about six months, but baby #2 was not satisfied with that. He started solids at five months and still has a big appetite at seven years! Baby #5 refused solids no matter how much I tried until he was a full eight and a half months!
Good Luck!

Well,
I’m a first time mother. And I was torn with this same question. My daughter would eat six ounces every two hours like clock work, and probably more if I would allow it. In between the two hours she would cry down the house because she was still hungry. I would try water until finally, I had to give into giving her pablum at three months. So I think it is up to you. You could get all the advise from doctors, family, and friends, but in the end you know what is best for your baby and you will do what is best. I’m sure of that. Good Luck!
